Da diverso tempo il nostro sito, in netta controtendenza rispetto alle abitudini italiane, ha seguito con interesse le vicende del rugby league, che vivrà a breve le emozioni della Coppa del Mondo 2013.
A tal proposito, abbiamo intervistato Carlo Napolitano, ex giocatore di Salford e Swinton, head coach e direttore tecnico dell’Italia, pronta alla sua prima Rugby League World Cup, oltre che ambasciatore del Variety Childrens Charity-Alopecia program.
La chiacchierata ha toccato esclusivamente i temi del campo, data l’imminenza della manifestazione.
Carlo, prima coppa del mondo per l’Italia. Siete pronti?
Sì, siamo pronti. È stato difficile il lavoro di diffusione del league nel paese, ma ce l’abbiamo fatta e non ho dubbi servirà altro tempo per avere progressi. Ho la sensazione che la situazione stia migliorando a ritmi accettabili e più avanti diversi giocatori provenienti dal campionato locale raggiungeranno gli standard per rappresentare l’Italia a livello internazionale. La preparazione alla Coppa del Mondo è durata 2 anni, su quattro differenti paesi. Sento che siamo al punto giusto, dove avevamo bisogno di essere. Non vediamo l’ora che arrivi l’esordio contro il Galles.
Anthony Minichiello, capitano della squadra, ha appena vinto il titolo NRL con i suoi Sydney Roosters. È un vero leader. Quanto conta, per il XIII azzurro, la sua guida?
Anthony è un giocatore veramente importante. Il collante sociale della nostra famiglia. È un vero professionista, dentro e fuori dal campo. Si è unito alla federazione dal 2011 e ha fatto grandi sforzi per assicurarsi che i migliori giocatori eleggibili per l’Italia fossero contattati e coinvolti.
L’Italia giocherà contro Galles, Scozia e Tonga. Quale avversario temi di più?
Penso che tutte e tre le squadre saranno dure da sfidare. Giocare contro il Galles nel gremito Millenium Stadium sarà difficile. Ma dico che anche con Scozia e Tonga saranno grandi partite. Il nostro metodo è prendere una partita per volta, e non fasciarci la testa prima di essercela rotta.
Allarghiamo lo sguardo all’intera Coppa del Mondo. Quasi tutti dicono che l’Australia vincerà facilmente il trofeo. C’è qualcuno in grado di fermare i Kangaroos? Inghilterra, Nuova Zelanda…
Quasi tutti dicevano che l’Australia avrebbe vinto il Mondiale 2008, per esempio. In ogni caso, quell’anno la Nuova Zelanda giocò una gran finale e alzò la coppa al cielo. Tutti i team sono battibili, e io posso solo dire che mi concentrerò sulle cose che possiamo fare sul campo e che questa sarà la nostra bussola.
Grazie dell’attenzione, coach. Un’ultima cosa: questa manifestazione riuscirà o meno a livello di pubblico? Dicono che è importantissima per il futuro del “greatest game of all”…
Credo che questa Coppa del Mondo abbia già generato profitti. Mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere Super League e NRL iniziare un po’ prima la stagione, così da dare a tutti i giocatori l’opportunità di un periodo di riposo prima delle sei settimane di impegno mondiale. Così non è stato ma è una situazione che accomuna tutte le squadre. Penso che, rispetto al 2008, avremo una competizione più equilibrata. Lo standard è migliorato in maniera significativa: non vedo l’ora che inizi. Grazie a te per le domande.

Carlo, Italy are playing in the RLWC for the first time. Are you ready?
Yes we are ready. It has been hard to establish Rugby League in Italy but we have done it and no doubt it will take time to progress but i feel the domestic comp is moving at an acceptable rate and more players from the domestic competition will be of standard and represent Italy. The preparation for the World Cup has been 2 years in the making and has encompassed 4 different countries. I feel we are at the point where we need to be and we look forward for the first game v Wales.
Your captain, Minichiello, has just won the NRL title with the Sydney Roosters. He is a true leader. Is his leadership that important also for your team?
Anthony is a very important player. He is the social fabric of our family and he is a true professional on and off the field. Anthony has been committed to FIRL since 2011 and he has put great effort to ensure the best players that are eligible to play for Italy have been contacted.
Italy are playing Wales, Scotland and Tonga. Which one you most fear? Who is the best Welsh, Scottish and Tongan rugby league footballer?
I think all three teams will be tough. playing Wales in a packed Cardiff, Millennium Stadium will be tough. But saying that Scotland and Tonga will be also a big game. But our mindset is to take one game at a time and not to get ahead of ourselves.
If we look at the whole World Cup, most of people say Australia will win it easily. Is there a team that can do it? England, New Zealand…?
Most people thought that Australia was going to win the 2008 World Cup. However we all know that New Zealand played great in the final to lift the trophy. I think this World Cup will be no different. The teams are all beatable and i can only concentrate on the things that we can do and that will be our main focus.
Thank you coach for your attention. One last thing: is the RLWC 2013 going to be a crowd success or not? They say it is so important for the future of the greatest game of all…
I believe that this World Cup has already posted a profit. I would have liked to see the both the Super League and the NRL start earlier so all the players could have had a rest before going into a 6 week World Cup. However that isn’t the case and it is the same for all the teams. I do think that this will be a closer competition than in 2008 and the standard have improved significantly. I’m really looking forward to it.
